Transfer and Transformation

ThIMo is implementing the TU Ilmenau's transfer strategy in the field of mobility.

Education and research at the Ilmenau University of Technology (ThIMo) have always had a strong practical focus – a healthy transfer environment and the targeted expansion of transfer potential are therefore of paramount importance. Intensifying science communication and technology transfer, as well as developing service-oriented transfer structures, are strategic objectives addressed through five areas of action:

  1. Target group-oriented information and knowledge transfer
  2. Research collaborations and strategic partnerships
  3. Intellectual property rights Spin-offs
  4. Transfer of knowledge through people

In its mission as an innovation platform and center of excellence, and with its specific focus on research, technology, and education, ThIMo offers information-based transformation consulting. It disseminates scientific findings with the potential for industrially viable and commercially viable solutions. In this way, the demand for expertise and infrastructure both within and outside of Thuringia can be effectively addressed.

ThIMo is addressing the upcoming challenges of mobility with its research initiative "Digital Mobility on Road and Rail." In addition to future-oriented research activities in its core competencies, ThIMo, in close collaboration with other Thuringian partners, addresses the key importance of digitalization. Based on its extensive expertise in the field of mobility and logistics in rural areas, as well as its high-performance research infrastructure and practical real-world laboratories, Thuringian businesses have access to a wide range of transfer activities and support services for transformation processes.

ThIMo is a member of the Thuringian Mobility Network

The Thuringian Mobility Network (TMN), which operates under the patronage of the Thuringian Minister for Digital Affairs and Infrastructure, focuses on institutionalizing exchange, communication, and knowledge transfer in the Free State's mobility sector.

On the one hand, the TMN develops innovative solutions, particularly for mobility in rural areas, which form the basis for the subsequent implementation of pilot projects. On the other hand, it develops strategic impulses for transport policy in the areas of demographic change, climate change, and the evolving mobility needs of the population.

Thuringian Institute for Mobility (ThIMo) contributes to Working Group 1 of the TMN through its director: "Transport Infrastructure and Mobility in the Context of Spatial Development." Effective April 1, 2025, Professor Hein has assumed the interim leadership of the working group.

ThIMo is participating in the regional innovation strategy RIS Thuringia.

he Thuringian Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS), under the patronage of the Thuringian Minister for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Development (TMWLLR), focuses on institutionalizing exchange, communication, and knowledge transfer in the Free State's strategic technology fields.

On the one hand, the RIS develops innovative solutions, including those for mobility in rural areas, which form the basis for the subsequent implementation of pilot projects. On the other hand, it develops strategic initiatives for transport policy in the areas of demographic change, climate change, and the evolving mobility needs of the population.

ThIMo is represented by its director as an appointed member of the RIS Strategy Advisory Board for the specialization field of “Sustainable and Intelligent Mobility and Logistics.”

ThIMo is a partner in the Thuringian automotive transformation network ANeTT

The transformation capacity of Thuringian companies and regions in the automotive and supplier industries is the focus of the ANeTT network; the project name stands for the development of a regional transformation support structure to sustainably strengthen the transformation capacity of the Thuringian automotive and supplier industries.

Under the leadership of the Thuringian Automotive Transformation Agency of the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG), the project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, strengthens the resilience of companies in the face of economic, technological, and societal challenges arising from demographic change, climate neutrality, and digitalization. To this end, a regional structure is being established that addresses the transformation capacity of companies, the transformation skills of employees, and the opportunity-oriented attractiveness of the regions for transformation. A key focus of the activities is the development of employee skills in conjunction with project-oriented know-how building within companies, based on qualification, transfer, and innovation hubs.

The "Transfer & Transformation" division of ThIMo is actively involved in this project, particularly through measures for information-based transformation. To this end, an expert network of Thuringian universities, research institutions, and funding agencies is being established, offering tailored, situation-specific consulting services. Based on ThIMo's application-oriented and industry-focused research and its close cooperation with Thuringian industry associations, relevant trending topics are monitored, evaluated, and communicated to stakeholders.

The knowledge transfer initiated or intensified through these formats addresses providers of education and training as well as the management level of interested companies. The technology consulting center, which ThIMo has operated in Erfurt's ThEx-Haus since January 2023, is open to all interested Thuringian stakeholders. In addition to LEG and ThIMo, the Erfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce is part of the project consortium. The project runs until June 30, 2025.
