As we use digital, interconnected applications and services today, AI permeates many areas of our lives. Rule-based AI, machine learning, and the generative creation of text and audiovisual media have become part of everyday life. In science and technological development, AI has long been an established tool for analyzing, optimizing, and controlling systems using digital twins. AI-based simulations allow for the testing of safety-critical scenarios across every conceivable aspect—even before, for instance, vehicle control systems are evaluated in real-world traffic situations. Through its "Digital Mobility" research initiative, ThIMo focuses on this trend, leveraging specialized expertise to support and connect researchers applying AI within ThIMo’s fields of study. This enables the faster conceptualization and targeted implementation of AI approaches in key areas and cross-cutting topics, such as automated driving. Concrete examples include analyzing test drives to assess operational environments, employing data-based methods to evaluate the reliability of sensor-based environmental perception and modeling, and addressing safety aspects related to control algorithms for automated vehicles.

Other areas of application include quality assurance in production processes, optimized component and machine design, and predictive maintenance for drive systems and energy storage units. Drawing on this expertise, ThIMo advises companies on the use of AI in R&D and offers information initiatives designed to raise awareness among mobility stakeholders and service providers regarding the deployment of AI-based components and system solutions. ThIMo is a partner in the network of Thuringian AI centers and collaborates closely with the Thuringian Center for Learning Systems and Robotics. AI applications also form part of ThIMo’s contribution to the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) Mid Germany, providing access to "AI factories" and STEP certification.
